The current rise in the rates of diabetes 2 and obesity, combined
with the rapid expansion of knowledge of basic biology, present
great opportunities for mathematical modeling. In some areas, mathematics
has already made important contributions, particularly understanding
the genesis and regulation of the oscillations of electrical activity
and calcium that drive insulin secretion. There has also been significant
modeling work on insulin action and whole-body metabolism. This
workshop will expose modelers to new problem areas and showcase
the areas where progress has already been made to experimentalists.
