Workshop 7: Insulin Secretion, Insulin Action, and Type 2 Diabetes (May 21-24, 2007)

Organizers: Richard Bertram, Arthur Sherman, and Les Satin

The current rise in the rates of diabetes 2 and obesity, combined with the rapid expansion of knowledge of basic biology, present great opportunities for mathematical modeling. In some areas, mathematics has already made important contributions, particularly understanding the genesis and regulation of the oscillations of electrical activity and calcium that drive insulin secretion. There has also been significant modeling work on insulin action and whole-body metabolism. This workshop will expose modelers to new problem areas and showcase the areas where progress has already been made to experimentalists.

The topics of the workshop will include:

  • Mechanisms of insulin secretion
  • Insulin action
  • Mechanisms of disease
  • Hypothalamic regulation of food intake and energy expenditure
  • Glucose sensing outside the beta-cell
  • Exemplary models at the gene and molecular level
